Choosing what to wear out for a night out is hard enough, let alone choosing outfits for family photos! As a photographer in New Hampshire, I get asked many questions, but one of the most asked one is "What should we wear?" Us women especially know the power of a cute outfit! It makes ALL the difference in the world!
Today I’m sharing 5 tips for choosing your outfits for picture day!

Hampton, New Hampshire Family Photographer
1. If you’re a mom, choose your outfit FIRST!
Of course, we always think of our children and husbands needs before our own. But when it comes down to family photos, let’s be honest, us moms are the ones that change our outfits the most! Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident. Treat yourself to a new dress, or wear one that you’ve always loved, either way, when it comes to an outfit, put yourself first.

2. Once Mom’s outfit has been chosen, use that as your guideline.
If mom’s outfit is a simple color, add in some textures / designs for the rest of the family. Depending on how large your family is, I usually recommend textures over patterns, as sometimes too many patterns can make it look too busy.
3. Think about what location you’ll be taking photos in.
Is the background busy? Then you may want to keep your outfits more neutral, as to even out the look. Is your background very simple? Then it probably would be a good idea to be add in some colors, textures, and accessories to make you pop more!

4. Stay in the same color scheme.
If the style you like is a warmer look (my style), then choose colors such as creams, browns, maroons, and a rust color orange. As I mentioned above, remember, your background as well. If your background will have lots of trees that are green in the spring / summer, you’ll want to stay away from green. You don’t want to be the same exact color as the background.
5. Have your outfits picked out days in advance!
I’m serious! When it comes down to the day of, you won’t want to be running late or feel stressed. Having everything picked out, will give you a much larger chance of having a more enjoyable time getting ready.

Of course, you can ALWAYS reach out to your
family photographer! I LOVE it when clients send me their outfits and ask my opinion. Last but not least, wear whatever makes you feel your best. If you want to wear all black, go for it! If you want to wear all white, sure! It’s YOUR photos. These are simply some recommendations.
